The Beginning of PIDAL
While known as the public swimming pool of Walferdange, PIDAL is actually a common project of three municipalities. The intermunicipal association PIDAL was founded on June 1, 1972 by Lorentzweiler, Steinsel, and Walferdange. Their shared goal was to build and operate a public swimming pool allowing them to offer swimming classes to the schoolchildren from the three communes. The planning phase for the construction of PIDAL began several years before its official opening on August 1, 1981. In its first full year of operation in 1982, the swimming pool welcomed 96,000 visitors. The milestone of 1,000 daily visitors was reached for the first time on August 18, 1988, highlighting PIDAL’s growing popularity as a key spot for sports and relaxation in Walferdange.
From Swimming Pool to Full Fitness Center
PIDAL started as a local swimming pool but has undergone several major expansions over the years:
- 1991 Expansion – The first expansion added two changing rooms, three saunas, a whirlpool, four solariums, a relaxation room, a snack bar, an outdoor pool with a lawn area, a fitness room, a massage room, and a medical station. This significantly increased the facility’s capacity and offerings.
- 2001 Expansion – The second phase introduced a unique outdoor sauna area with four sauna cabins overlooking a beautiful garden. This phase also included the addition of a lawn and an outdoor pool, enhancing the center’s outdoor wellness experience.
- 2010 Expansion – The third and most significant expansion introduced the concept of “Wellness à la carte.” The fitness room was completely redesigned and relocated. A new spa and wellness area was added across two floors, featuring a saltwater pool, two relaxation rooms, and a rooftop terrace. Private suites with saunas were also introduced, along with six massage rooms and spaces for beauty treatments. The new construction covered a total area of 3,000 m².
